What official sources reported
Each statement is dated. Closures, shelters and water notices change; check the source for current status.
- On November 2, 2026, the City of Port St. Lucie reported significant rainfall over the weekend and into that day, with standing water in areas across the City and several major roads closed as of 6:45 p.m.
- In its November 3 advisory the City described excessive flooding, listed road closures as of 5 p.m. that day, and said St. Lucie County Emergency Management had opened temporary shelters for people whose homes flooded.
- The City asks owners whose homes took in floodwater (and who are not in danger) to report it to 1PSL at 772-871-1775, press 3. The City states that this report does not replace filing an insurance claim.
- On November 3 the South Florida Water Management District issued an emergency order covering seven counties, including St. Lucie, and said more than ten inches of rain fell in 36 hours in certain parts of the emergency areas.
- Report residential flooding to 1PSL (772-871-1775, press 3) for the City's damage records, and separately notify your insurer(s).
- If your vehicle was moved off a flooded road, the City said to call 1PSL or the police non-emergency line, 772-871-5000.
- On November 4, 2026 the City announced that pre-applications for its SHIP-funded Disaster Relief Program would open November 5 for income-eligible homeowners needing critical flood-related repairs. Assistance is subject to City review, program requirements and available funds; check the City's official program page for current availability.
- Road and facility notices were dated; check current City updates before travelling.
The official notices cited here describe heavy rain and flooding. Coverage depends on the observed water source and the wording of each policy.
Evidence checklist for owners
Document damage only when officials say it is safe to return. Never enter floodwater or go near electrical hazards to take photos. Do not delay urgent cleanup, or keep unsafe or contaminated items, just for an insurance inspection.
- Photos and video of the highest water line on interior and exterior walls, with a tape measure in frame, before cleanup, when it is safe to do so.
- Wide and close shots of every room, including flooring, baseboards, cabinets, doors and appliances.
- Where water entered: ground-level doors, garage, slab, roof, windows, drains or toilets. Each can point to a different coverage.
- A room-by-room list of damaged belongings, with brand, age and receipts where you have them. Photograph items before disposal when it is safe, and keep small samples only if that is safe and practical.
- Mitigation records: drying company invoices, moisture readings, equipment logs and dumpster receipts.
- Copies of every policy on the property (homeowners, flood, condo association, auto) and the claim number for each.
- A dated log of calls, emails, inspections and requests from each insurer.
Policy questions to answer early
- Do you have a separate flood policy (NFIP or private)? Most homeowners policies exclude surface flooding.
- Did water come through a damaged roof or wind-opened window? That may be handled under the homeowners policy, depending on its wording.
- Did water back up through drains or sewer lines? Many policies cover this only with an added endorsement.
- What are the deductibles, limits and contents coverage on each policy?
- What deadlines does each policy set for notice, proof of loss and inspection?
