Insurance claims after inheriting a Ferry Pass home in East Milton
November 5, 2026 · PAJOE Public Adjusters
If a home is damaged after the named insured dies, the person who discovers the loss may have limited authority to act on the estate’s behalf. Report the situation to the insurer or agent promptly and ask what documentation it needs. Collect the declarations page, renewal notices and recent correspondence. Use a secure channel for any estate or personal records requested.
Record access and occupancy accurately
Write down who has been checking the home, when anyone last occupied it and when the damage was first found. Preserve dated maintenance records, photos and receipts for emergency protection. If a relative finds water after several weeks away, distinguish that discovery date from any earlier date suggested by a contractor. Ask for the evidence behind any opinion about when the damage began.
Separate urgent work from decisions about authority
Keep receipts for steps taken to protect the property. Before signing an estimate, release or settlement, confirm who can make that decision. Ask the insurer which policy provisions it considers relevant to occupancy, notice and the insured’s identity. A Florida estate attorney can advise on authority and probate questions. Keep the names and roles of everyone involved in a dated contact list.
